Rangers have been exceptionally active in the transfer market, and they are widely expected to continue with their business before the conclusion of the window. One area of their team that requires considerable improvement is in defence, and the Gers have been linked with a potential move for West Brom’s Gareth McAuley.

As the Daily Record reported at the start of June, Rangers have already made contact with McAuley over a potential one-year deal with the Gers. The experienced Northern Irish defender is available on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with the Baggies, who were relegated from the Premier League to the Championship.

Throughout the entirety of his career, McAuley has illustrated his qualities as a proficient goal scorer. In 522 appearances, the experienced defender has scored a staggering total of 42 goals – a genuinely sensational record for a centre-back – 17 of which were scored for West Brom.

In addition to his startling attacking quality, the defender is highly regarded for his defensive characteristics. The Northern Irish defender has developed a superb ability to dominate aerial duels. Furthermore, he exhibits tremendous intercepting quality. He has also developed fine passing skills, and he tends to play useful long-balls.

Rangers’ need for defensive reinforcement is clear for all to see. Despite finishing the season as the Scottish Premiership’s most clinical attack, they conceded a woeful total of 50 league goals – which is far too many to have a realistic opportunity to curtail Celtic’s dominance.

The potential arrival of Gareth McAuley would greatly augment the quality of the Rangers defence, while also providing the Gers with priceless experience.
