£540,000-rated 22-year-old discusses joining up with Rangers squad this summer

On-loan Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty is relishing a return to Steven Gerrard’s first-team squad this summer, believing he’s a better player now than he was last year, as reported by The Daily Record.

The 22-year-old, who is rated at £540,000 by Transfermarkt, has spent the entire season on loan at English League One outfit Shrewsbury Town, helping them to a mid-table finish.

He’s been one of their stand-outs across the campaign, scoring nine times and assisting eleven more in 45 appearances.

The prospect believes he is now well placed to push for a place in Gerrard’s first-team plans.

As quoted by The Daily Record, Docherty said:

I know what’s at stake and I need to deliver if I want to get in that team. To be fair, the midfield at Rangers is strong at the moment but I’m realistic and you’ve got to back yourself.

I’ve watched the team from afar and seen how they play. I’ve been watching and listening to the interviews from the management and players and see what they want to do.

I feel like I’m a better player but it’s up to me to show that. I’m not going to get ahead of myself. I’ll fight and try my best. The contract is there and I’ve got time on my side.

Docherty’s contract at Rangers runs until the summer of 2022 so he has plenty of time to prove himself at Ibrox and cement his place in the starting eleven.

As noted by the player himself, competition for places will be fierce with Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Ross McCrorie all ahead of him in the pecking order right now.

His return will be a boost to Gerrard’s options though and could stave off the need to make a central midfield signing when the transfer window opens.

Docherty has talent and if he returns with the attitude he displays in this recent interview then he has every chance of making an impact.
