The headline speaks for itself, Rangers managed a very impressive 36 attempts on goal against Aberdeen on Saturday.

Of the 36 shots, 13 found the target, 36.11% in a marked contrast from the Livingston game one week ago when it was three from 24, a meagre 12.5%.

The difference in approach and set-up from both opponents is an obvious factor, but it was first and foremost about what Rangers did on the day.

Last week on Vital Rangers, I stated that the team would require courage, conviction and cohesion (at the very least) in order to get anything against Napoli. That proved to be a challenge too far but there were some good moments of play in that game even if it was never quite a contest.

Those qualities were brought into Saturday’s victory and were stamped all over the domination of Aberdeen. Jim Goodwin may have had second thoughts about the expansive, open style that he deployed which Rangers countered to a significant advantage. It is OK spotting flaws in the opposition but can you exploit it?

Aberdeen thought they could only for Rangers to show how it is really done. That was the pattern of the game with Connor Barron’s opener spurring the Gers on further to make their mark. The response was emphatic via goals from Antonio Colak, John Lundstram, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos.

The captain’s missed spot-kick was hardly a talking point, then there was another conversion from Morelos rightly chalked off for offside as well as some very good chances spurned.

One way traffic was the story of the game with the 36 shots as a key indicator of the direction of travel.
