Former Rangers attacker Charlie Miller has stated that Calvin Bassey will be sold for a very significant record sale at Ibrox.

His prediction would mean serious potential for stability and reinforcements for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s chase to return the Scottish Premiership title to Ibrox in what will be his first full season at the club as manager. Given the thrilling, roller-coaster end to the last campaign, there is plenty of intrigue and anticipation about what comes next under the Dutchman.

The supporters are right to be upbeat, but with the new season comes the same expectations and demands which are simply part of life on Edmiston Drive.

Time will tell if Bassey will be retained by the Gers, but Miller doesn’t think so, telling Glasgow Live:B

“I think Calvin Bassey will be away with a £25 or £30 million bid.”

“There might be three or four others who could go. Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo, Allan McGregor. It’s a bit of a rebuilding job for Giovanni.”

“But with the wages they recoup and transfer fees they get for these players, it should give him a hefty budget, especially after the European run.”

“The board have backed Steven Gerrard over the last couple of years so hopefully they can back Giovanni. Hopefully he gets his signings right.”

Balance

Speculation on the Nigerian international will continue throughout the Summer so it will be interesting to see how and when any interested clubs test Rangers’ resolve.

Anything in the ball park of £25-30 million and he will be away. Quite simply, that kind of money cannot be turned down. Whilst expectations of interest and bids to follow is more than reasonable, it should also come with a realisation that the Scottish football market comes with a glass ceiling as well as a limit on what can be expected in terms of a fee.

Any record sale plus the potential for Champions League income would make for a very satisfactory Summer from a financial perspective but as Charlie Miller pointed out, that comes with a need to get the signings right for the next challenge, looming fast.
