22-year-old discusses progress ahead of arrival in Gerrard’s Rangers squad this summer

|

Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has enjoyed his loan spell at Shrewsbury Town massively, as reported by The Shropshire Star, and looks in good shape ahead of a return to Steven Gerrard’s squad this summer.

The 22-year-old has made 45 appearances for the English League One outfit this season, impressing with nine goals an eleven assists from the central midfield area.

He’s been given the first-team football that both he and Steven Gerrard were looking for when he was sent on loan last August.

The player himself feels it’s been a massive benefit, helping him mature off the pitch as much as on it.

As quoted by The Shropshire Star, the midfielder explained the impact the move has had:

The backing for me and even having it back home, people well-wishing me. It’s up to me to go and deliver. I’ve got a good solid base behind me. The whole town has been great and I’m not getting carried away. I want to deliver for the fans and give it back.

I’ve grown massively off the pitch maybe in areas I didn’t think I had to. It’s a new league, going to different grounds, places where people didn’t know who I am.

I’m trying to get my name out there more and it’s been great, invaluable to be honest. When I hear the support from the stands backing me it really pushes me on.

I do want to try my best and I’m so grateful to the support. There’s a job still to be done and I need to keep going and repay them. I feel fresh with five games to go and I’m ready for every game.

Competition for first-team places will be fierce when the former Hamilton Accies man returns.

The arrival of Glen Kamara has further heightened that, alongside the already regular contributions from Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Ross McCrorie.

With Lassana Coulibaly’s loan expiring though and the future of Graham Dorrans in doubt after debilitating injuries, there is room for Docherty to make his mark if he impresses Gerrard in pre-season.

Fans still have high hopes for Docherty and everyone wants to see him realise his potential.
