Despite the significant success at Ibrox this season, it is expected that one or two players will be sold in the Summer.

The important element of player trading was one of the ‘business pillars’ discussed at length at this year’s AGM by Rangers chief executive Stewart Robertson and deputy chairman John Bennett.

For the club to be self-sustainable, it has to realise good value for players at the right time.

VitalRangers has previously looked at this issue, with Dave King alluding to the same in recent days with one eye on transfer business in the close season.

It is clear that Rangers have several assets of real value in the squad.

Individuals such as Alfredo Morelos, Glen Kamara, Borna Barisic, Connor Goldson will have interested parties watching them.

This isn’t necessarily a negative – it is the model that successful clubs in lesser leagues like Ajax and Porto utilise to great effect.

If players aren’t sold at the right time, there is a risk to the club that Rangers can ill-afford.

This has been highlighted by the saga of Odsonne Edouard at Celtic.

Last week, the France U21 international  was linked with a £15 million move to join his former manager Brendan Rodgers, at Leicester.

This is far less than what Celtic had wished to recoup for the player but the key issue here is the relatively short time left on his Parkhead contract.

Edouard’s contract expires at the end of next season – May 2022 – and as things stand, he will be able to negotiate a free transfer from the turn of the new year.

It appears inevitable that his current club will cash in as soon as possible but they only have themselves to blame for not protecting their asset.

In amongst the madness and meltdown at Parkhead in recent times, they have failed to sell when his stock has been highest as well as not safeguarding their own interests with a contract extension to maintain value.

A Daily Mail report included:

“Leicester City believe they have won the race to sign Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.”

“Sportsmail understands that the player has indicated he wants to join his former boss Brendan Rodgers at the King Power Stadium and a deal is close to being agreed for a fee of about £15million.”

“Rodgers took Edouard to Celtic from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, initially on a season-long loan before signing him for £9m, and Leicester’s manager sees the 23-year-old as the long-term replacement for veteran forward Jamie Vardy, 34.”

“Edouard will have 12 months left on his contract this summer and that, as well as a sell-on fee of around 40 per cent owed to PSG, has driven down the price.”

“At one point Celtic had hoped to receive as much as £40m for the striker, who has scored 83 goals in four seasons.”

“It is said they will instead gamble on recouping a larger sum by negotiating a sizeable sell-on clause of their own.”
