Rangers are interested in signing Portsmouth defender Jack Whatmough during the January transfer window, according to The Sun.

Steven Gerrard has already made a number of defensive signings since joining the club last summer, but it appears another centre-back is on his radar as he looks to strengthen his squad for the second half of the season.

The Sun believe that the Gers are battling it out with Celtic and Aberdeen for Whatmough’s signature, whose contract expires in less than six months.

Just 22-years of age, the £115,000-rated (Transfermarkt) Pompey man has 90 senior appearances to his name for the club across English League Two and League One action.

While clearly not cutting his professional teeth at the highest level, he is set to make a step up in his career and as a budget signing, the Gers could probably do a lot worse.

Joe Worrall isn’t going to be at Ibrox forever, making it clear he is looking for a return to Nottingham Forest, while Gareth McAuley has a limited shelf life at the club too.

That makes the need for another centre-back fairly strong beyond the end of this current season and signing up Whatmough on a pre-contract could be just the ticket, especially if we’re nabbing him from under Celtic’s nose.
