Could Rangers reignite an interest in PSV Eindhoven’s Joey Veerman? The Dutchman has recently fallen out of favour in the city of light and has been linked with a switch to Turkey in the local press in the Netherlands.

Voetbal International reports that Besiktas are interested in taking the Dutch international cap to Istanbul, as they aim to capitalise on the situation at the Philips Stadium. In a hotly contested Eredivisie this season, PSV currently sit at third in the table, three points behind leaders Feyenoord but two points ahead of misfiring Ajax.

As in Amsterdam, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s PSV is not firing on all cylinders with domestic consistency proving to be problematic. The manager has opted to leave Veerman on the bench in their last two games, fuelling suggestions that all is not well between player and boss. The legendary striker is still to prove himself as manager and in a challenging first season at PSV, it would be a bold step to sanction a loan move for the 24-year old.

With this latest speculation of a potential loan switch to Besiktas, it is interesting that it has not been ruled out immediately so what of a potential resurrection of Rangers interest? Firstly, Veerman is the type of quality that Michael Beale and Ross Wilson should be targeting if the team is to truly move forward. The capture of Todd Cantwell and reported imminent deal for Nicolas Rasking will also help toward that goal.

We all got a close-up glimpse of the capabilities of former Heerenveen man Veerman in the Champions League qualifiers at the start of the current campaign. Rangers triumph in that tie was known to be a sore one for the midfielder, who labelled the Gers as a ‘very mediocre‘ team. That tag will have came about due to frustrations over the CL encounter but on the European stage and the evidence presented in the Autumn, it’s difficult to disagree.

Such words and feelings would hardly prevent a move if interest was genuine on both sides but taking a step back for a moment, is there the capacity and need for such a move? If it was just to be a loan, probably not. Rangers, as Beale has stated need hungry players for the challenge ahead over the next 12 to 18 months. There isn’t the need for stop-gaps, especially expensive ones, as good as the player is.

If he was to be available at an attainable price, it would be much different but given his increased profile, contract length and prominence on the fringes of the Dutch national squad, those factors would most likely see Veerman out of Rangers realistic reach on the basis of a permanent deal.
