Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is planning to replace Ovie Ejaria with another English Premier League prospect – Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell.

Ejaria returned to Liverpool this weekend after having his loan deal at Ibrox ripped up, after a week of drama involving missed trips to Austria and showdown talks with Gerrard.

Looking to move on from that failed signing, the Rangers boss is already interested in another loan move, according to The Scottish Sun.

The paper report that Everton’s Dowell is seen as a potential direct replacement for Ejaria, with Gerrard admitting he is a big fan of the England U21 international.

Rated at £2.7m by Transfermarkt, Dowell isn’t without senior first-team experience having spent last season out on loan at English Championship side Nottingham Forest, where he made 43 appearances in total, scoring nine goals from midfield in the process.

That points to a potential gem of a player at Scottish Premiership level and certainly someone who can bring more of an end product to the Gers side than Ejaria managed.

The question must be asked though, is another loan move in January the way forward in midfield? Or should Gerrard be looking at either investing time in a homegrown talent or securing a permanent deal?
