The end of the road at Ibrox beckons for Rangers prospect Josh McPake.

Now 21, the one-time youth prospect hasn’t quite blossomed as hoped to the extent that his time at the club will soon be coming to an end.

McPake is currently on loan at Queen’s Park in the Scottish Championship where he has contributed to the Spiders fine form in the second tier and they remain on track for a promotion push with a current four point lead at the top of the table.

This current spell follows on from several others at Dundee, Morton, Harrogate Town, Morecambe and Tramere Rovers. At some point, the lad will need to go out and play first team football on a permanent basis to build some momentum and progress in his career with a very good chance that will happen before the end of this month.

This afternoon, the Glasgow Herald has reported that the winger is wanted by Chesterfield of the National League as they aim to make their way back into the English Football League system. However, four goals across 22 appearances with Owen Coyle’s side could lead to an extended stay with the Lesser Hampden club if they can come to an agreement with Rangers football department over a fee.

The Herald feature included:

“Boss Paul Cook has identified McPake as the man to give their promotion push another boost in the second half of the campaign as he attempts to secure a play-off spot in the coming months.”

“And Rangers won’t stand in the 21-year-old’s way as they look to offload McPake as part of the remodelling of the squad under new boss Michael Beale that has already seen midfielder Charlie McCann head for the exit door and secure a switch to Forest Green Rovers.”

Northampton, Gateshead, Yeovil have also been credited with an interest in recent days.
