Todd Cantwell took another step forward in his fledgling Rangers career as he scored his first goal for the club against Motherwell.

After the game, Michael Beale praised the January signing for his ongoing impact on the team as well as the personal satisfaction he would have felt upon netting the Gers third goal on Saturday at Fir Park.

The best that can be said for the former Norwich man is that already he is looking like a key player for Rangers, with his quality and work rate very evident. After just a matter of weeks, there is no notion of a settling in period or appeals for patience, Cantwell is delivering.

In the 2-4 victory, he put in his usual industrious, energetic performance – taking up a position on the right side of central midfield, looking to build the attacks and thread passes through the lines. A goal had been coming for the Englishman in recent games so thankfully he was in the right position after a pinball situation in the Motherwell box to secure the crucial third goal, from Rangers third attempt in that one action, as Beale’s team turned the screw.

The Rangers manager stated post-match:

“I think he’s surprised a few people in terms of his positioning. He’s playing a bit deeper and working ever so hard for the team. He regains the ball and is involved in all aspects. One key are is to create goals and score.”

“He got an assist last week for Scott Arfield and scores his first today. I’m delighted with him and for him. That’s a special moment for him personally.”

It was definitely a moment to remember, in what should be the first of many.

Todd Cantwell is already showing significant potential in his early days at Ibrox following a disrupted first half of the current season at Carrow Road where he was effectively frozen out.

Looking ahead to the new season, with the benefit of a full pre-season on top of his present exposure to life in Glasgow on and off the pitch, there is plenty more scope for the 25-year old to prosper and excel in royal blue.
